SHE surfs Bali - the best place to learn to surf!

Hands up who loves surfing

If you've always wanted to learn to surf, put Bali at the top of your list; SHE thinks it might be the perfect destination. Our small group of 4 ladies spent a week over Easter road testing our 'SHE surfs' program. SHE surfs heading out Each day we headed out with our local surf instructors – Frengki and Putu and their team. The session started with a warm up on the beach, some guidance about the conditions, learning what to look for once we were out in the ocean, understanding surfing etiquette, and importantly, how to handle the boards. You’re guaranteed to be well looked after: with one instructor to every 2 ladies, our group was up and on their boards on the first wave – there was much cheering and a lot of delighted screams!

Hands up who loves surfingThe water was a delicious 24 degrees, the location chosen by our boys each day ideal for the group’s surfing level. We bypassed the beaches frequented by the many surfing schools in Kuta and Legian, and found ourselves on uncrowded waves that seemed made just for us. We whooped and laughed, and in the words of one of our ladies “screamed like banshees” on lovely long rides with our hands up in the air celebrating the moment.

Lunch was spent reliving the morning, laughing again about the waves we’d missed, the wipeout of the day, the best party wave. And then it was time for an afternoon snooze, lazing by the pool, or, for the more enthusiastic, hitting the shops. And amongst all this, we managed to fit in massages to ease the tired muscles and prepare us for the next day.

Drinks at MosaicWe dined in some of Bali’s best restaurants; fish and chips and cocktails in coconuts at the relaxed Salty Seagull, espresso martinis and tapas at La Favela, Bali margaritas and crispy boneless duck at the wonderful Indonesian restaurant Merah Putih. Surfing certainly works up an appetite!

The ladies slept like happy, content babies, tired in the best possible way from the physical exercise in the water each day. Morning yoga sessions helped stretch the muscles and prepare the group for more time in the water. And at the end of the week it was unanimous: we felt strong, we couldn’t believe what we had achieved, and how far we’d progressed with our surfing. There were very sad faces as the ladies said goodbye to our amazing surf instructors and reluctantly left the beach; not forever, just for the moment. Once you discover the magic of Bali and the sheer joy of riding a wave, you’ll most certainly want to return.

You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.
