Talk to frequent visitors to Bali and they'll more often than not be recommending Seminyak as their preferred place to stay. Its reputation has grown over the years as the place to stay and play for the well-heeled traveller. It's known for its excellent restaurants, groovy bars, funky venues, and live music options. And for the traffic jams down the famous Jalan Laksmana or Eats Street, as it's affectionately known. If you want to avoid all this hustle and bustle, it is possible to stay in this area and not move too far. Seminyak is perfect for the pool or beach all day, and to party all night. Something for everyone? SHE thinks so. Sunsets are famous in this part of the world and you’ll be spoilt for choice when deciding where to be at this very special time of day. If you’re looking for fancy, it’s hard to go by the swanky W Hotel and the Woo Bar for happy hour cocktails. Cool music, 2 for the price of 1 drinks, and people watching in a very swish setting.
If you prefer something more casual take a walk along the beach, past the W, to Cantina and Warung Pantai. The ice cold Bintang (served in a stubby holder!) will set you back around AU$2. Go here once and you’ll be welcomed back every time like a long lost friend. There’s nothing fancy about this beach bar but SHE loves that it’s old school Bali. Buy a hat from Harry – whether you need it or not, just because they’re around $8. You’ll be rewarded with a flash of his fabulous smile, and you’ll be helping the local economy!
When it’s time to eat, head back to the main road (hitch a ride on the complimentary golf buggy transfers from the W lobby – you’ll feel very special). There are so many dining choices along this stretch of road, and one of our favourites is Taco Local. SHE thinks these are the best tacos in town, and the margaritas are pretty great too. There’s a relaxed, casual atmosphere, and streetside dining to watch the passing parade. The friendly staff will help with menu suggestions, but beware of the large serving sizes - SHE never quite manages to get through all the food we order! What a nice problem to have!
If Mexican’s not your thing, head down the road toward Seminyak and you’ll find Café Petitenget – great any time of the day. SHE loves the coffee and breakfast (you’ll satisfy your Melbourne style latte / flat white fix here), lunch and dinner menus tick the boxes too.
Across the road you’ll find the signs pointing to Luke Mangan’s new venture ‘Salt Tapas’ in the Sentosa Villas. The menu is all about sharing, fantastic tapas in a very sexy environment. Further around the corner and fronting the beach is the Bali institution – La Lucciola. SHE feels like a grown up here: the food and service are excellent, and don’t leave without sampling the cracking coconut daiquiris!
SHE loves this area and the fact that you don’t need to venture too far from ‘home’ if you want to avoid time in taxis. For luxury accommodation, SHE chooses the Sentosa Villas, and it’s here we base our ladies’ surfing holidays. Our little piece of paradise is tucked away off the main drag, minus the constant traffic noise, and is the perfect retreat at the end of a busy day. Now to make time for a massage and to lie by the gorgeous pool!
SHE travels runs 7 day surfing holidays for ladies based in Seminyak. Visit our website for 2014 dates.
